Butterfly valve is one simple structural industrial valve, which is usually used as globe valve and regulating valve to connect, cut off and control of flow rate of mediums in low pressure pipeline systems.
There are different various types of butterfly valves, like with different structure, there are concentric butterfly valves and eccentric butterfly valves;
for different sealing materials, there are soft seal butterfly valves and metal hard seal butterfly valves;
with different end connect, there are wafer type butterfly valves, wafer lugged type butterfly valves, and flange butterfly valves;
with different operating device used, there are manual lever handle butterfly valves, worm gear box operated butterfly valves, electric actuated butterfly valves, pneumatic actuated butterfly valve;
with different material used for valve body, there are cast iron butterfly valve, cast steel butterfly valve, stainless steel butterfly valves.
Wafer type butterfly valve and flange end butterfly valve are two widely used types of butterfly valves, today we are going to introduce the differences between that two kinds of butterfly valves:
1. flange butterfly valve and wafer butterfly valve are two different end connect butterfly valves. There is no much difference in their working principles: the operating device drives the valve stem to move, and the stem drives the butterfly plate to rotate to realize the opening and closing of the butterfly valve; their difference is mainly on different price and different installation method;
2. The price of wafer type butterfly valve is lower than that of the flange type butterfly valve. Therefore, when purchasing the butterfly valve, if there are strict requirements for cost control, it is recommended to use the wafer butterfly valve which has low price and light weight. Generally, the price of the wafer butterfly valve is only 2/3 of that of the flange end butterfly valve;
3. The installation bolts for wafer type butterfly valve are relatively long, and require high construction accuracy. If the flanges on both ends are not aligned during installation, the bolts will be subject to significant shear force, resulting in leakage. In addition, the wafer butterfly valves are not suitable for high temperature systems, because the bolts of the wafer butterfly valve will expand at high temperature, which will cause leakage. Flanged butterfly valves do not have those above problems, and flanged end butterfly valves are suitable for a wider range of working conditions.
4. There are no flanges at both ends of the wafer type butterfly valve body, and special flanges for wafer butterfly valves are required during installation. Compared with the flanged end butterfly valve, the wafer butterfly valve is more convenient to disassemble and its cost is lower. The disadvantage of wafer type butterfly valve is that if there is a problem with one sealing surface, both sealing surfaces need to be disassembled. The flanged end butterfly valve has flanges at both ends of the valve body. During installation, the flanges are connected with the pipe flanges, and its sealing performance is more reliable, but the cost of flange end butterfly valve is relatively high.
