Valves are used to control the flow of liquids and gases. Ball valves, globe valves and gate valves all are used to control the flow of liquids. These various types of valves are all used to connect, cut off or regulate the medium flow in the pipelines. So it is important to understand their differences and their applications.Â
Introduction about ball valve:Â
Ball valve is made of solid elements, which is highly durable. Even after a long periods of stock, the ball valve can still can still work great. The ball valve has a sphere made of brass, stainless steel or chrome-plated brass which is embedded within the valve body. There is a handle lever at the top of the sphere that can only be rotate a quarter of a turn. When the lever is parallel to the pipe, the sphere allows the water( or other mediums) to flow. When the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the solid ball stops the flow of the water. The handle lever can be rotated from 0°to 90° to control the water flow. On the other hand, the lever can be rotated any angle between 0° and 90° to allow part of the water to flow through the pipe, but due to the water pressure, the pipe may be deformed. The advantage of ball valve is that the ball valve can be opened and closed fast, while the water will keep hammering the ball body and the sides of the pipe, unless the ball is fully opened to guide the water flow.Â
Introduction about globe valveÂ
Globe valve, also known as cut-off valve, is a forced sealing valve, so when closing the globe valve, pressure must be applied to the plate to force the sealing surface not to leak. When the medium enters the globe valve from the bottom of the disc, the resistance that the operating force needs to overcome is the friction between the valve stem and the packing, and the thrust generated by the pressure of the medium. The force to close the globe valve is greater than the force to open the globe valve, the diameter of the valve shaft must be large, otherwise the valve shaft may be bent. According to different end connect, globe valve can be divided into flange end globe valves, threaded globe valves and welding end globe valve. According to the different channel direction, globe valve can be divided into straight through globe valve, DC globe valve, angle globe valve and plunger globe valve.
The stem axis of the globe valve is perpendicular to the sealing surface of the valve seat. The opening or closing stroke of the valve stem is relatively short, and also the globe valve has reliable cutting-off effect, which makes globe valve suitable for cutting off or regulating and throttling the medium.Â
Introduction about the gate valve
Gate valves are used to control the flow of liquids and are usually operated by turning the hand wheel to drive the valve disc to move up and down to realize the opening and closing of the gate valve. Gate valve can only be used for fully opening and fully closing, can not be used for regulating and throttling. When the valve disc moves to the lowest position, it stops the flow of water. When the wheel is operated in reverse, the valve plate moves to the highest position, and the water can flow without hindrance. It is easy to know the opening state of the gate valve through checking the exposed part of the valve stem, if the valve stem is raised and visible, the gate valve is opened; when the valve stem is not visible, the gate valve is closed. The gate valve is in contact with the flowing water, and is therefore highly susceptible to corrosion, and then fails. Because of the slow operation of gate valve, it is not easy to generate the water hammer. Gate valves should be used in open or closed conditions, gate valve may be damaged by water pressure and vibration, if they are not properly installed or operated.Â
According to different stem design, gate valve can be divided into rising stem gate valve(OS&Y gate valve) and non rising stem gate valve.
With different standards, there are GB gate valves, DIN F4 gate valves, DINF5 gate valves, API gate valves, ANSI AWWA gate valves, BS5163 gate valves and JIS gate valves.
For different body material used, gate valve can be divided into gray cast iron gate valves, ductile cast iron gate valves, carbon steel gate valves, stainless steel gate valves and copper alloy gate valves.
For different sealing structure, gate valves can be divided into resilient seated soft sealing gate valve and metal to metal hard sealing gate valve.Â
